Mary English retired from the University of Tennessee Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment in 2010. She is a social scientist whose work has focused on energy and environmental policy issues. Her research has included mechanisms for involving stakeholders in public policy decisions, information-gathering and analytic tools to improve decision making, and best practices in conducting socioeconomic impact assessments. From 2002 through 2010, she taught a capstone seminar on ethics and architecture for graduate students in the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design.

 

Over the past three decades, Dr. English’s work on energy and environmental policy issues has been wide-ranging. She was a member of the Tennessee Air Pollution Control Board and has served on a number of committees of the National Research Council (NRC) as well as the NRC’s Board on Radioactive Management and its Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology. Recent NRC committees on which she has served resulted in reports on uranium mining in Virginia (2012), the hidden costs of energy (2010), and the environmental impacts of wind energy projects (2007).
