The National Scenic Byway program was established in 1991 to protect the intrinsic character of the nation's more scenic corridors. A spin-off of this program was the establishment of State Scenic Highway Programs in most of the states in this country. Most state programs are like the structure and processes established by the National Scenic Byway program, but each state has autonomy on how their program operates. The program was de-funded in 2012, but in 2020 new designations for National Byways were accepted, with funding expected to be approved in 2021. National Scenic Byways are an integral part of the nation's transportation infrastructure and impact visitor experiences and overall tourism, protect intrinsic natural resources, and promote cultural heritage. This presentation takes a holistic look at how National Scenic Byways can be integrated into federal, state, and local organizations and activities, etc.
