Fire and smoke are the primary threats to the safety of the occupants in a building. Fire and smoke can travel quickly both horizontally and vertically unless special efforts are made to prevent this from happening. The use of rated assemblies in this passive system of fire protection is considered the first step in controlling the spread of smoke and fire. This course will discuss the active fire-protection system and its components, which include detection, alarm, and extinguishing systems, and will provide a fire protection checklist at the end of this course. The overall aim of the fire-protection system is to detect a fire in a building or space, warn the occupants, and suppress the fire until the fire department arrives.
