Each service installation job you do will be different because of different site conditions, but the basic installation skills and practices you will learn in this course can be applied no matter what type of service installation job you're doing.
 
This interactive online course will teach you how to install and connect services. You will learn about the different types of connectors available and how service conductors are joined together using some of those connectors. You will also learn how to install single phase, overhead, and underground residential service. Additionally, you will learn how to install three-phase service, and how to replace an existing three-phase service without affecting the customer.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify common service connectors
  • Explain the four basic steps for making a service connection
  • Describe how to connect a residential service at a weatherhead
  • Describe how to connect a single-phase underground service at a meter box
  • Identify and Describe the different types of back feed tests
  • Identify the steps taken to install a three-phase service
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Bobby Ward
Mr. Ward has worked over 35 years in the electrical transmission and distribution industry. He worked 15 years with Dillard Smith Construction Company, Six (6) years at City of Dayton Electric Department, and 15 years at the Chattanooga Electric Power Board.
 
During Bobby’s 15 years with Dillard-Smith, he provided transmission construction and maintenance services, installed and maintained substations, fiber optics, and communication towers.He also worked on numerous emergency storm restoration efforts in the Southeastern US.
 
During Bobby’s six (6) years as a City of Dayton Electric Department Lineman, his duties were performing highly skilled, journey-level distribution and electrical work in the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution and service lines, transformers, meters, metering equipment, electrical substations, and related equipment.He also worked on numerous emergency storm restoration efforts in the Southeastern US.
 
During Bobby’s 15 years with the Power Board, he worked in three positions. As an Overhead Journeyman Lineman, his duties included performing highly skilled, journey-level distribution and electrical work in the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution and service lines, transformers, meters, metering equipment, electrical substations, and related equipment. As a Line Crew Supervisor, supervised a line crew performing the tasks shown in the lineman description above. And as a Line Inspector, inspected work performed by line crews to verify correct work completion. While working at the Power Board, Bobby also worked on numerous emergency storm restoration efforts in the Southeaster US.  After retirement from the power board, Mr. Ward continues to work on emergency storm restoration efforts in Southeastern US.
