Green design is an evolutionary process—every day designers, engineers, academics and other innovators continue to expand the constellation of green design materials and techniques. No set of professional standards could ever be exhaustive enough to deal with every conceivable scenario. Therefore, a holistic ethical understanding of green design is necessary, as is an ability to embrace the constant change inherent to the industry.

This course will cover ethical concepts and codified professional ethical standards as they relate to green design, as well as topical environmental and group functionality issues.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the codes of ethics recognized by the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, American Society of Landscape Architects, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
  • Identify how ethical and professional responsibilities extend to the natural environment.
  • Demonstrate adaptation to emerging environmental issues, such as population growth, climate change, water scarcity, and species extinction.
  • Recognize and analyze the differences between benchmarks, goals, and standards.
  • Explain the relationship of knowledge and trust to green design.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Mary English, PhD
Mary English, PhD Photo
Mary English retired from the University of Tennessee Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment in 2010. She is a social scientist whose work has focused on energy and environmental policy issues. Her research has included mechanisms for involving stakeholders in public policy decisions, information-gathering and analytic tools to improve decision making, and best practices in conducting socioeconomic impact assessments. From 2002 through 2010, she taught a capstone seminar on ethics and architecture for graduate students in the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design.
 
Over the past three decades, Dr. English’s work on energy and environmental policy issues has been wide-ranging. She was a member of the Tennessee Air Pollution Control Board and has served on a number of committees of the National Research Council (NRC) as well as the NRC’s Board on Radioactive Management and its Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology. Recent NRC committees on which she has served resulted in reports on uranium mining in Virginia (2012), the hidden costs of energy (2010), and the environmental impacts of wind energy projects (2007).
