Construction Project Documentation: Navigating Pitfalls

Construction Project Documentation: Navigating Pitfalls

2 hrs. Online Course

Level: Fundamental

Item#: RV-10787AW

SME: Scott Lowe, P.E.

This course will show you how to successfully document your construction projects. While all projects start with the best intentions, problems will inevitably arise. Knowing how to use common documentation forms on a construction project will help ensure the successful resolution of these problems. This course will show you which documents to use, and when; what information to include, and why; and what to say, and how to say it persuasively. You will find tips, tools, checklists, along with good and bad examples of documentation. The instructor will lead you through each step to help you navigate the pitfalls of poor construction project documentation.

Scott’s expertise is in the areas of critical path method scheduling, construction claim preparation and evaluation, specification writing, and training.

Scott has directed and performed all types of analyses related to claims including delay and inefficiency (typically using measured mile for inefficiency); assessed responsibility for contract changes; and calculated various types of delay damages. He has evaluated problems and offered solutions on almost every type of project including transportation, water and wastewater treatment, power, process and manufacturing, medical, educational, commercial, correctional, hotels, condominiums, residential, and athletic facilities. He has worked on projects large and small throughout the US and internationally.

Scott is a co-author of two books (Construction on Contaminated Sites and Construction Delays: Understanding Them Clearly, Analyzing Them Correctly); chairman of the Time Management Committee that developed the Construction Management Association of America’s standards of practice and procedures for time management; and developed and presents the National Highway Institute’s course, Managing Highway Contract Claims: Analysis and Avoidance.

Scott has provided expert witness testimony before the American Arbitration Association, the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals, in court, and in other forms of dispute resolution. He has extensive experience in the preparation of expert reports and written testimony, interrogatories, discovery requests, questions for depositions and cross-examination, and trial exhibits. He has also presented many times at mediation. Scott has been qualified as an expert witness on the issues of cost and damages, delay, inefficiency, contract interpretation, and other issues related to the determination of the reasonable value of a claim or change and appropriate time extensions.

Scott has particular expertise in the drafting of improved language for standard specifications and general provisions. Scott has helped many state departments of transportation and others update, revise, and make best practice improvements to their standard specifications.

A nationally-renowned speaker, Scott develops and conducts seminars and webinars on the topics of construction scheduling; claims avoidance and resolution; project management; and delay, acceleration, inefficiency, and cost analysis.

Before joining TRAUNER, Scott was an officer in the United States Navy. A graduate of the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program, he acquired extensive experience in project management and scheduling.
