The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) stated in their Spring 2007 newsletter, "your home's roof, wall-to-roof connection, and openings (windows and doors) are key areas that can be significantly strengthened against windstorms." It is probably no coincidence that these are the major areas of emphasis in the Florida Building Code requirements given in “Hurricane Mitigation Retrofits for Existing Site-Built Single Family Residential Structures.” In this interactive online course you will learn about these Florida retrofit requirements that went into effect in October 2007, which projects have these requirements, and how to implement them.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify the types of home renovation projects that are subject to the requirements in “Hurricane Mitigation Retrofits for Existing Site-Built Single Family Residential Structures” (called “Hurricane Retrofit Manual" in this course)
  • Describe roof-decking attachment and fastener retrofit requirements as specified in the Hurricane Retrofit Manual
  • Explain roof-to-wall connection retrofit requirements as specified in the Hurricane Retrofit Manual
