Design of Steel Elements for Second Order Effects

Design of Steel Elements for Second Order Effects

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-10872AW

SME: Jill Nelson, PE, SE, LEED AP BD+C

Many steel designers do not incorporate the requirements of Chapter C Design for Stability (AISC 14th Edition) into their design of steel elements. Chapter C states that stability shall be provided for the structure as a whole and for each of its elements and that the effects of second order effects (also called P-delta effects) shall be considered. It also states that the approximate methods defined in Appendix 8 is permitted as an alternative to a rigorous analysis. This course will define these second order effects and their parameters, calculate their values and compare designs with and without these effects. Simple guidelines will be developed for their use.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between the two types of second order effects and their role in defining the stability of a structure.
  • Calculate the required parameters for second order effects due to gravity.
  • Calculate the required parameters for second order effects for each story of a structure and each direction of lateral translations.
  • Calculate the required second-order flexural strength and axial strength of members.
  • Compare and contrast design with and without these second order effects.

Jill Nelson is a registered Civil and Structural Engineer in California and Washington. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno and a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Washington with an emphasis in Structural Engineering. With over 20 years of experience, she is an accomplished designer of low and mid-rise building constructed of wood, steel and concrete. Through the years her areas of interest has increased to include both new construction and renovation of existing buildings with a focus on seismic rehabilitation. Ms. Nelson is currently an Associate Professor in the Architectural Engineering Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
